The countries represented in this program, either today or throughout history, have experienced the devastating effects of war. The tremendous human cost to war is the reason why we titled this program as we did - Songs of Innocence and Exile - to frame our humanity, how precious it is, and how much we endure to survive. This program weaves the innocence of childhood, the joy of imagination, and the safety of home, with the anguish of leaving that home either voluntarily or involuntarily, the bittersweet pain of memory, and awaiting the reprieve that death can bring - either through the blissful afterlife or relief from suffering. This program was created to foster perspective, refuge, catharsis, joy, hope, understanding, and compassion for the powerful stories these songs tell and the people they represent.
